Preparing for the Hobby Progress Challenge

Image
Last week finally saw the end of Romulan project as, having already gotten them most of the way to completion, I was able to quickly finish the job and get them crossed off my list. To do this, I simply followed up on the work from the prior two weeks by ... For the Romulan minis, applying a highlight of Zandri dust on the regular Romulans, obviously avoiding the deepest crevices of the skin. I followed this up with an edge highlight of Kislev Flesh. Then applying an edge highlight of Fenrisian Grey to their hair. Next I moved onto Commander Sela, applied another layer of Kislev Flesh, similar to the Zandri Dust highlight Then I added an edge highlight of Flayed One Flesh to her most raised points. For Sela's hair, I added a layer of Screaming Skull. Following it up with an edge highlight of Wraithbone. Finally, I finished the bases I had been working on by  continuing to apply Khorne Red. Lastly, I used Warpstone Glow to highlight the name plates. With that...

Total Star Trek week!

Image
Week two of my new writing process and I continued where I left off from last week, as I continued working on the Romulan Away Team from Star Trek Away Missions. This week, I worked as follows? Applied Balthasar Gold to the weird necklace thing that Romulans seem to wear. Used Leadbelcher on the Romulan Disruptors and their Tricorders Applied Zandri Dust for all Romulan skin (except Sela) Sela's skin was given a base colour (3 coats) of Kislev Flesh Sela's hair received 3 coats of Wraithbone The rest of the Romulan hair had a touch up of Abaddon Black (also used a dot of this for the eyes) Then I applied several washes; Nuln Oil on the metals and Romulan Skin, Reikland Fleshshade on Sela's skin and Iyanden Yellow (a contrast more than a wash) on Sela's hair Applied a second wash of Agrax Earthshade on the metal Drybrushed the brass with Sycorax Bronze followed by Runefang Steel Finally, I drybrushed the silver with Ironbreaker In between all of these other step...

The beginning of the Romulans

Image
It's been a while since I've posted here. In truth, time and opportunity to write has not been my friend of late but also, the concept of writing something after every completed project felt a little long-winded to me. Therefore, I thought I'd take a que from the Hammer My Backlog blog (which I'd recently discovered) and discuss my hobby journey on a weekly (or bi-weekly) basis rather than by project. And what better time to start than at the beginning of a new project. About 18 months ago, I picked up Star Trek Away Missions, a tabletop miniatures skirmish game which works in a similar vein to Warhammer Underworlds. Now, the accompanying miniatures (which are all designed with this heightened reality vibe that has been controversial but I really vibe with) have all been painted, but last Christmas, I received two additional expansions, including the Romulan Expansion team. In truth, I've been subtly working on this collection of miniatures for the past couple ...

Not enough troops ... but plenty of Captains

Image
I have a question; how many captains is enough? Is there such a thing as having too many captains? (Ok, that's actually two questions) In the last few days (from when I wrote this), Games Workshop announced a new Captain Centos miniature to celebrate a milestone store opening (or something like that. I'll be honest, after seeing the mini, I kind of lost interest in the words that came with the image). This new Captain is both a beautiful looking mini as well as an Ultramarine, something which would work well with my Ultramarine army as well as a fun painting project. However, while I am VERY tempted and am going to try and get a hold of a copy (ahh, this must be that FOMO I've heard so much about), I do wonder if, from an army building perspective, a purchase of Centos is a little excessive. This is because, presently, my miniature collection, which includes an Ultramarine army of barely 2,000 points, contains four Captains; Uriel Ventris, Captain Messinius, Cap...

Starting Fresh ... By Moving to Embergard

Image
It's been a couple of months since I wrote about painting my Hospitaller and, since then, I've also completed the Tau Invocation of the Elements and the Outnumbered miniature of Galen and Doralia Van Denst from Age of Sigmar. Because of this, I decided that I wanted to have a fresh start and what better way to do that than with a new direction. A couple of months ago I purchased Warhammer Underworlds Embergard as well as the Revenant of the Realms warband collection. I had always been a big fan of the sculpts for the Crimson Court warband and when the new edition of Underworlds came out, I thought it would be a worthy acquisition, especially as it would be a nice little introduction game to play with my kids. Unfortunately, it didn't quite work out on the gameplay front (maybe when the kids are older). However, this has left me with six warbands consisting of 29 character level miniatures to paint, a nice change of pace to all the units I've done in the last...

Hosptialler - An argument for part-assembly painting

Image
After just scraping under the line and getting my Centurion Assault Squad done by the end of February, I decided to change tack with March and do a character, rather than a unit and something that wasn't Sapce Marines. However, because all I had left primed were Adepta Sororitas, the only option was my Hospitaller (not that it is a consolation prize because, upon realising it was next, it found myself eager to begin on it). Already primed with Chaos Black, I decided to start with a drybrush of Dark Reaper. However, not owning Dark Reaper, I endeavoured to make my own, using equal parts Abaddon Black and Caledor Sky along with a bit of Celestra Grey. The result turned out well, although after applying, it didn't seem to do the job I wanted from it. However, I did something and so I decided to press ahead, applying the army's primary colours of Mephiston Red and Celestra Grey, while also applying Stirland Mud to the edge of the base. So, with the main colours of the mini bloc...

Centurion Assault Squad - The Last of my First Born

Image
Following my Bladeguard Veterans being the first project of 2025, I decided to get through the last of my 2022 gifts completed, and with them the last of my first born models. My Centurion Assault Squad have been sitting and waiting for their time for a while. This is mainly out of fear that I wouldn't manage to get them to a quality I wanted for them. It was also because they took a while to prepare, applying magnets so that they can be modified. However, after a Macragge Blue Primer and some other projects catching my eye first, I finally made it round to them. My technique here was much the same as with the Vets. A cover of Macragge (for anything the Primer missed) followed by a wash of Nuln Oil which focused on the armour only (not the weapons). After that dried, I applied a drybrush coat of Macragge Blue followed by a lighter drybrush coat of Calgar Blue. Then, I moved onto the rest of the paints, applying them as follows: Black  - Abaddon Black (B), Eshin Grey(h), Dawnstone (...
