Preparing for the Hobby Progress Challenge

Last week finally saw the end of Romulan project as, having already gotten them most of the way to completion, I was able to quickly finish the job and get them crossed off my list.
To do this, I simply followed up on the work from the prior two weeks by ...
  • For the Romulan minis, applying a highlight of Zandri dust on the regular Romulans, obviously avoiding the deepest crevices of the skin.
  • I followed this up with an edge highlight of Kislev Flesh.
  • Then applying an edge highlight of Fenrisian Grey to their hair.
  • Next I moved onto Commander Sela, applied another layer of Kislev Flesh, similar to the Zandri Dust highlight
  • Then I added an edge highlight of Flayed One Flesh to her most raised points.
  • For Sela's hair, I added a layer of Screaming Skull.
  • Following it up with an edge highlight of Wraithbone.
  • Finally, I finished the bases I had been working on by  continuing to apply Khorne Red.
  • Lastly, I used Warpstone Glow to highlight the name plates.

With that, Sela's Romulan infiltration team are done! I must admit, I'm proud at how they turned out, especially given that I had to figure out on my own the paint scheme. If there is one criticism to my own work, it continues to be the faces. I thought I'd done better initially, but I do feel I let myself down with the final highlight for all of the minis.

Oh well, something to work on for next time.

Which is what I then spent the rest of the week working on (because finishing these Romulans only took me half of the week). When the Independent Characters podcast implement the Hobby Progress Challenge last summer, I looked forward to using it as a way to reduce my pile of opportunity as well as connect with a wider network.

Well, I'm not sure either of those things worked and I found it a little stressful towards the end. However, I, the glutton for punishment that I am, have decided to re-enter for the 2025/26 year. My planned projects for this period are:

October - Picard's Away Team
November - Infernus Marines
December - Lieutenant Titus
January - Captain Centos
February - Captain in Terminator Armour
March - Librarian in Terminator Armour
April - The Crimson Court
May - Retributor Squad
June - Kainan's Reapers
July - Zikkit's Tunnel pack
August - Provisionally Prepared

I'm hoping with these projects in this order, I can get things finished with some efficiency, such as the Picard Away Team (which, hopefully, will only take 2 and a half weeks) as well as all the Space Marines (which I hope to paint nearly simultaneously).

In fact, now the Romulans are out of the way, I might just start this whole process a couple of weeks early.

Bladeguard Veterans: reaffirming my armour painting

In January, for my first project of 2025, I decided to catch up from Christmas 2022 and finally paint my Bladeguard Veterans. In fairness, there was a dual reason for this as not only did allow my unpainted pile to become a little more recent but it also gave me a chance to effectively reaffirm the process I used to paint battle armour (something which seemed a little all over the place in 2024) So, after a Primer of Macragge Blue (along with using the pot to catch anywhere I missed), I proceeded to wash the armour only with Nuln Oil. Once that was dried, I drybrush a final coat of Macragge Blue before drybrushing over it with a coat of Calgar Blue. This left me with a tone of blue which look visually consistent to how I'd gotten Uriel Ventris and my last batch of Assault Intercessors After that, it came down to painting, washing and highlighting the rest of the minis. 11. Suppressors: Completing Strike Team Solarien (Sort of)

So, midway through last month (January 2024) I bought a copy of White Dwarf 496. I'm very haphazard regarding such purchases but, on this occasion, there was something inside which really intrigued me: the rules for the S olarien Task Force. While I haven't done so yet, I am eager to get into the playing side of the hobby. However, when (or more likely 'if') I get to playing for the first time, I want to start small and what smaller than a Combat Patrol. At this point, I already have a full combat patrol for Adepta Sororitas but, with their rules on miracle dice seeming a little complex, I wanted to maybe start simple with some of the Space Marine miniatures I already have. This is what made the Solarien Task Force both intriguing and tempting; because so far I already have a painted Phobos Lieutenant, a squad of Infiltrators and a Librarian (although Legends instead of Phobos.
