8. Plans for 2024!

2024 is only a few hours away as I write this and I thought I'd put my thoughts down in writing for what I wanted to do in the new year.

2023 has seen me paint 44 new models since this time last year. From a whole new army in the form of the Adepta Sororitas (or at least most of one), a transport, several units where I attempted to improve my painting skills and, to finish off the year, a hero model in the form of Captain Messinius.

So, with all of that behind me, I wanted to go bigger for 2024. As such, the following, are what I hope to accomplish:

Paint up my backlog

Like many others that I've seen over the internet, I have my own backlog of models in need of painting. Some, like my Tactical Squad, have been partially painted. However, the vast majority of my outstanding models have barely been started (apart from a few primed Vanguard models). At the moment, my list is:

  • 3 x Infiltrators
  • 7 x Tactical Squad
  • 3 x Eliminators
  • 3 x Suppressors
  • 1 x Attack Bike
  • 1 x Uriel Ventris
  • 3 x Centurion Assault/Destroyer Squad
  • 3 x Bladeguard Veterans
  • 10 x Assault Intercessors
  • 5 x Celestian Sacresants

All of this should cover the majority of the year, based on how I painted the first few Infiltrators not long back. I don't intend to buy anymore until I reach the last box, where I plan to go forward with the same plan of 'having one box in reserve'.

That way, I won't feel so overwhelmed for 2025.

Play games of 40k

Since I started collecting Warhammer 40k back in March 2022, I've only played one game; a teaching game at my local shop one lunch hour (and that wasn't recently). Therefore, I'd like to make time to play more games this coming year. I've found a couple of clubs in my area but the only issues to find the time from real life to attend one (or both) of them.

Learn to play (and paint the miniatures for) Star Trek Away Missions

I received a new game for Christmas: Star Trek Away Missions. I'd hoped to get it as an introduction for my sons to tabletop games. As such, I'm hoping to learn how to play while also adding the ten miniatures to my painting backlog (what's a few more).

Learn to paint better

Starring with my unit of Infiltrators last year, I started to work at improving my painting. For 2024, I hope to continue that with working on my techniques for:

  • Power Armour
  • Recess shading
  • Edge Highlighting
  • Power Swords
  • Cloaks
  • Faces

Hopefully, I'll have plenty of opportunities to work on all of the above.

Create an objective marker

I have a couple of spare bases amongst my bits box, along with a load of other parts and so, one thing I want to try and do is build a custom objective marker.

The idea in my head is a pile of head with a sword at the top. I also hope to create it in such a way that I can use it as a larger base for any small based models (like my Librarian).

Better organise my storage

Lastly, I want to better organise my storage. All of my Warhammer and relevant paints are stored within two IKEA Kallax boxes, and a little scattered at that.

Therefore, I want to get it better organised. An easy task, but still something important to me.

So, that's 2024 all planned out. I'll make a start tomorrow.
